Differences & Similarities with Addictions

Problem Spending/Money Hoarding

People do not necessarily see spending as a serious problem. For the over-spender, the
hoarder and their respective families, there are issues that tear relationships and whole
families apart. The emotional emptiness is always calling the over-spender or the hoarder.
This particular addiction is extremely harmful to many marriages as it leads to arguments,
possibly bankruptcy and even divorce. Finances are among the most sensitive and
problematic areas in a marriage. As one of the founding members of the National Counsel
on Spending and Credit Disorders, I was able to see how wide spread this problem is and
how it totally ruins people’s lives

What is common to all addictions?

One common factor is that all addicts go through various stages of addiction.

The first stage of addiction is "Internal Change". In this stage, people become aware of
their mood changes when they are involved with the addiction. Their mood improves and in
general, there is a sense of escape and getting away from their problems or uncomfortable
feelings. The individual turns more and more to the addiction when they are feeling stressed.
During this stage, the person develops a dependency on the addiction. They move away from
people and toward the addictive experience
